What is TETRA?
Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) is a digital trunked mobile radio standard developed to meet the needs of a wide variety of traditional Professional Mobile Radio (PMR) users. Using this technology, TETRA Ireland manages the National Digital Radio Service (NDRS) providing Ireland’s only fully integrated and dedicated network to Security, Fire & Safety, Health, Government & Public Service agencies.
About TETRA Ireland
In January 2007, Tetra Ireland was awarded preferred bidder status to build, own and operate the National Digital Radio Services (NDRS) Network on behalf of the emergency services and non commercial bodies. As part of that status, the company built a trial network in North Dublin comprising 14 sites in May 2007 to test the coverage and functionality of the service.
In May 2008, Tetra Ireland signed the 8-10 year contract with the Department of Finance and commenced the build of the network in September 2008. The Dublin network was built in March 2009, and the first users came on the network In Dublin in June 2009, after extensive testing by the agencies. The remainder of the regions were built over the next two years, and the nationwide network was completed on the 15th October 2010 with county Donegal completed on that date.
